Meditation is defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary as either engaging in contemplation or reflecting or to engage in mental exercise (as concentration on one's breathing or repetition of a mantra) for the purpose of reaching a heightened level of spiritual awareness. It is not thinking. The challenge is to stop our conscious minds from thinking that endless chatter and noise of thoughts. "Quiet the mind and the soul will speak" said Maya Jaya Sati Bhagavati.
It is is about finding a quiet place where you can be alone seated in comfortable clothing and slow your breathing down and then gently direct your focus on a thought, a positive affirmation, a candle flame, a colour, an emotion or whatever you choose to focus on. It is a time to find that quiet part within your inner being. That inner stillness, that peace that exists in all of us but for so many is buried beneath layers of worry, stress, work and money concerns. It is just a question of reaching within and releasing that existing inner serenity that exists in all of us and which we were born with. Most of all it is awareness. Being aware of the beauty of a single flower, the poetry of a bird singing in a tree, the joy of a flowing stream.
